The Afghan strode into the room, then spun on his heel, his eyes flashing. “Shut the door, Hugh. We need to talk.”
Wilkes did as he was told, trying not to pay any attention to the weird feeling he’d gotten in his gut when Balkhi called him by his first name. The feeling intensified when the rest of what he’d said sunk in. We need to talk?
“O-okay. What about?”
Balkhi let out a heavy sigh. “You are not a stupid man, so please do not behave like one. We need to talk about… whatever is going on here.”
Crossing to his bed, Wilkes dropped heavily onto the mattress. “Yeah. You’re right. But the trouble is, I have no idea what to say.”
Much more gracefully, Balkhi sat down at the other end of the mattress. “I don’t, either. But we cannot go on like this. People are going to notice, and that won’t be good for either of us.”
A smidgen of relief wormed its way into Wilkes’ brain. That was positive, at least. Balkhi understood the dangers of this… thing… between them, so he wasn’t about to demand they go public and start wandering around the Afghanistan desert hand-in-hand.
