The Setting for Pack of Lies (@cw1985) #werewolf #paranormal #erotic #romance

Hi everyone,

Pack of LiesToday I’m going to talk a little about the setting for Pack of Lies, which is a paranormal erotic romance novel. The setting is a beautiful village called Eyam (pronounced Eem), which is in Derbyshire, England. It’s also in the Peak District—which is my very favourite place to spend time.

It’s quite an old-fashioned village—at least at its heart. There are newer properties creeping in around the edges, but there are still lots of very old houses and cottages, lots of remnants from the past, and all surrounded by stunning countryside. It’s also steeped in history, which naturally brings in lots of tourists. And well it should, it’s a fascinating place, with a museum, a village square, a stately home and a lonely moor on the outskirts.

It was easy to be inspired by this gorgeous village setting, even without the unique history that sparked off my imagination. Want to see what all the fuss is about? Check out the photos on my Pinterest board: http://www.pinterest.com/cw1985/pack-of-lies/

The book has been incredibly well received so far, with lots of four and five star reviews—so if you’re a paranormal romance fan, I hope you’ll check it out!

Meanwhile Isaac is smitten by a handsome newcomer to the village, while a vivacious visitor is happy to offer Matthew her all.

As they indulge their lust, they must clear their names and convince their neighbours that they aren’t also letting their baser instincts out to play.

My Inspiration for Pack of Lies (@cw1985) #werewolf #paranormal #erotic #romance

packoflies01Hi everyone,

Over the next couple of weeks or so, I’m going to be sharing some behind the scenes information about my second novel, Pack of Lies, which is a paranormal thriller with werewolves, love, sex, betrayal and much more! If you followed my blog tour for the book, you’ll likely have read much of this information already, but I wanted to compile it all in one place and also give those that haven’t seen it before another opportunity to check it out. I hope you enjoy finding out more about the book 🙂

Today I’m going to talk a little about my inspiration for this novel, which is a paranormal erotic romance. It’s actually a pretty unusual type of inspiration—the plague, or Black Death. Before you run away screaming, or think I’m insane, let me explain. Trust me, it’ll be worth it.

There’s a village in Derbyshire, England, called Eyam, which was hit by the plague back in the 1600s. It was rumoured to have entered the village on some cloth from London, which was rife with the Black Death at the time. So far, so depressing, I know. But the villagers did something incredible—they quarantined themselves, having no contact with the outside world, in order to stop the disease from spreading. Brave, huh?

Now, that’s an incredibly short version of what happened, but if you’re a history buff you can look it up online, or check out the addendum in Pack of Lies. Anyway, this true story was something I learned about in school when I was much younger, and it stuck with me. As an adult, I visited the village and was still fascinated by the subject, so much so that I began to think about writing a book set in Eyam.

Fast forward to summer 2013 and I’m thinking about starting work on my second novel. I wonder if the Eyam idea is worth considering further. Another visit to the village and I made my decision. It’s a beautiful, fascinating place with a rich history, and I wanted to write something which would meld fact and fiction, past and present—and so my werewolf brothers, Matthew and Isaac, were devised. They’ve lived in the village all their lives, but as werewolves, were immune to the plague, and as immortals, are still around over four hundred years later, in modern day Eyam.

This isn’t a historical novel, however. It has historical elements, but is very much set in today’s world. It’s very different to anything I’ve written before, as it’s a thriller with lots of romance and sex, lies and betrayal and, of course, alpha male wolves! Yum.

The book has been incredibly well received so far, with lots of four and five star reviews—so if you’re a paranormal romance fan, I hope you’ll check it out!

packoflies02Excerpt:

As Matthew and Isaac Adams opened the front door to their house, the telephone started ringing. Matthew sighed. “Typical. No rest for the wicked. I’ll answer it, you go and get ready for work.”

Isaac nodded and headed off to do as his brother advised. Matthew, the older of the two, walked toward the ringing phone and snatched it off the hook. Then, remembering that the person on the other end of the line would have no idea what a rough night he’d just had, he made the effort to inject some politeness into his tone.

“Hello? Adams residence.” Isaac had told him time and time again that the last part about the residence was old-fashioned, that people didn’t say that anymore, but Matthew couldn’t seem to shake it.

“Hello, Matthew? It’s Richard.” The village vicar’s voice, even though he’d only spoken four words, sounded strained, almost panicked. “You boys just get back?”

“Yeah, a moment ago. Why, what’s up?”

“I, uh… I got a call. A dead sheep has been found up on the moor. Not just dead. Mutilated. Like a wild animal attack.”

An unpleasant feeling wormed its way under Matthew’s skin and his stomach flipped. “Oh?” He paused, then figured he had nothing to gain by not saying the next words he wanted to. “You don’t think it was us?”

The vicar’s gasp was instant, one of genuine surprise. “Lord, no! Absolutely not. I just phoned to let you know and I was wondering if you’d come up there with me and take a look. You and Isaac are probably more qualified than anyone else in the village to tell what did this.”

“Isaac has to work, he just went to get ready. But yes, I’ll come up. I’ll let my brother know where I’m going, then I’ll be straight over. Are you at the rectory?”

“Yes. Okay, I’ll see you soon. Thanks, Matthew. Bye.”

“Goodbye.”

Matthew hung up the phone with another sigh. The horrible feeling that had crept under his skin and taken over his gut seemed as if it was there to stay, and it was never a good sign. The vicar’s news was surprising, yes, but he also had an inkling that it was going to spell trouble, or at the very least inconvenience, for him and his brother.

Pulling in a deep breath in an attempt to calm his jangling nerves, Matthew walked upstairs and toward his brother’s bedroom. The door was closed. He knocked. “You decent?”

“Yeah,” Isaac replied, “close enough.”

Stepping into the room, Matthew looked at his brother. He was half-dressed, ready for his shift at the doctor’s surgery, where he was a general practitioner. “Sorry to interrupt, mate, but that was Richard on the phone. They’ve found a mutilated sheep up on the moor, and he’s asked me to go with him to check it out.”

Isaac paused with one arm pushed into his shirtsleeve. “He doesn’t think—”

Matthew cut him off. “No. He was quite adamant about that. He just thought we’d be able to help figure out what did it. I explained that you’ve got to go to work, though. I’m going to head across there now and go up with him.”

“I could phone in, let them know I’ll be late.”

Matthew held up his hand. “There’s no need, brother. Relax. Just go to work and help the sick people. I’ll let you know what—if anything—I find out.”

Opening his mouth, then closing it again, Isaac seemed to have thought better of whatever he was going to say. He continued to dress. “All right, I will. But make sure you let me know what happens. Send me a text or something, and I’ll phone you as soon as I have a gap in between patients.”

Matthew grimaced. He hated texting. Hated mobile phones, actually. Technology was one of the things he disliked most about modern-day life, though he realized it was a necessary evil. It solved as many problems for him and his brother as it created, so he dealt with it as best he could. Fortunately, Isaac had always had an affinity with computers and phones, so he tutored his older brother.

“Yeah, all right. I’d better go and find my phone first then, eh?”

Smirking at his brother’s rolled eyes, he left the room and headed for his own bedroom, where he thought he’d left the device the previous night, before he and Isaac had headed for the caves. Immediately spotting the mobile phone—which Isaac often made a point of telling him was akin to a brick—he grabbed it and stuffed it into his pocket and made his way downstairs.

Retrieving his keys from the hook by the front door, he called up to his brother. “I’m going now, Isaac. I’ll see you after my shift at the pub. I’m working until closing time.”

“Okay. Don’t forget to keep me posted!”

“I won’t.” As if he could forget. The dead sheep was going to be a big thing, he just knew it. The vicar might not think he and his brother had anything to do with it, but some of the other villagers might. When there was no proof either way, just his and Isaac’s word, it was understandable, really. Since he and his brother changed into wolves every full moon, it was a natural conclusion to draw. Particularly since normal wolves had been extinct in England for over five hundred years.

Sunday Snog – Trespassing

Sunday Snog

Boys Will Be BoysIt’s time for another Sunday Snog, yay! This week, I’m sharing a snog from my short story, Trespassing, which appears in the M/M anthology, Boys Will Be Boys. I looooove that cover, don’t you? 😉

Instead of replying, Ben pulled off his hi-vis vest and t-shirt, dropping them to the carpet. They were quickly joined by his shorts and boxers, and Jack couldn’t prevent his gaze from dropping to the other man’s cock. His own throbbed almost painfully, and his mouth watered. He wanted to taste that cock, to touch it, to feel its hardness and its heat…

Sitting on the double bed, then scooting back up to rest on the pillows, Ben beckoned to him. “Get naked and come here.”

Grabbing his nervousness, screwing it up and shoving it to the very back of his mind, Jack did just that. As Ben pulled him gently into his arms and began kissing him again, he knew he had nothing to worry about. He was in good hands.

Their bodies pressed together, cocks brushing against each other, straining, leaking pre-cum, eager to be touched. But there was no rush—right now, kissing was all that mattered. Parted lips, heaving chests, thrusting tongues… Jack had never felt anything like it before in his life, and already he knew he was going to get addicted.

Gaining a little confidence, Jack let his hands wander. He tangled them in Ben’s hair, cupped his face, stroked his throat, his pecs, the ridges of his abdomen. Exploring further, he reached around and cupped a pert buttock, the skin smooth, but the muscle beneath firm and ripe.

This week’s theme is a sexy date night. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to put in a romantic snippet from Stately Pleasures, my M/F/M ménage, which is available for just $0.99/£1.49.

She didn’t get chance to make a cheeky comment because Jeremy was back, and this time he appeared to be carrying something with … candles. Birthday candles. She let out an excited squeak as she realised it was a cheesecake – her favourite – which had not nearly enough candles for her age pushed into its surface. She watched, wide-eyed, as Jeremy placed it down on the table between the three of them, then turned to her with a triumphant smile.

‘You like?’

‘Do I like? What do you think? You know I love cheesecake. Is it –?’

‘– vanilla? It sure is. Your favourite. And it’s even homemade.’

Alice looked at the dessert, noticing that it wasn’t quite picture-perfect, and realised he was telling the truth. ‘Wow, you two have been busy today. Have you done any work at all?’

‘Not really,’ Jeremy said. ‘But that’s just one of the perks of being the boss, isn’t it?’

‘I guess so,’ she replied. ‘Well, I’m very glad you both bunked off for this – all of it, I mean, not just the cheesecake.’

You can buy Stately Pleasures here.

Excerpt:

Neither Mike Russo nor Cody Latham had expected her to show up in their conference room.

Of course, they wouldn’t have, given the various laws she’d broken to be here.

Shana Gallagher’s pulse ticked up another notch at that and their good looks. Virile and commanding. They were deliciously hot and smart, having once worked in military intelligence.

Mike, the proverbially tall, dark and handsome hunk, had found his way into government via his MIT training. He’d left DC five years ago to start his own firm. Now thirty-three, he regarded Shana with momentary surprise then male interest as his attention raked over her.

Despite her best intentions, Shana’s skin tingled.

To his side was Cody. Equally impressive at thirty-four, he forgot to take a sip of his coffee. The Starbucks cup was inches from his mouth as he also took her in. Quietly and restrained.

Shana’s belly quivered at the heat in his gaze, so at odds with his military background. It showed in the set of his broad shoulders and modified buzz cut, his hair short on the sides with volume on top. Those dark blond locks complemented his golden skin and hazel eyes.

Mike’s were greenish-gray, an arresting color given his olive complexion and chestnut hair, a bit longish and casually styled. Several strands dangled over his forehead, begging a woman to ease them back.

Currents of warmth rippled through Shana, leaving her cruelly weak. She hadn’t expected to react like this. During her research on them, she’d seen hundreds of their photos, including those not meant for the public. Their days spent with women, outdoors at the beach or sailing, both men’s hard bodies stripped to their swim trunks and bared to the sun. Mike’s bold tattoo on his left bicep. The cruel scar on Cody’s right pec that enhanced his masculinity.

None of those pictures had done them justice.

“Mr. Russo, Mr. Lathan,” the office manager murmured, her somber hush appropriate for this high-priced firm in New York’s Financial District. Dressed in a severe gray suit, the matronly woman smelled funereal, of incense and carnations. She inclined her perfectly coiffed head to Shana. “Ms. Gallagher, your four o’clock.”

Before Mike or Cody could say “huh” or “who?” Shana stepped deeper into the yawning room. It was possibly two thousand square feet and decorated in a combination of rose, beige and brown, its bank of windows offering a spectacular view of the harbor. An NYPD boat and cruises packed with tourists cut through the water, leaving foamy trails. Sunlight winked off those swells and the glass buildings, giving the early September day a dreamy, golden haze.

The door clicked shut behind Shana, leaving her alone with the men.

Mike pushed to his feet, his six-three frame superbly clothed in an Italian suit that probably cost five grand. Its subtle navy tones and his pale blue shirt heightened the effect of his sapphire tie. Cody’s was gray-and-white striped, his shirt charcoal, his suit a pewter color. Surprisingly fashionable given his conservative background.

He stood. His height matched Mike’s. Both men were lean yet muscular.

Power and male privilege radiated from them. Everything Shana had always mistrusted and despised. She couldn’t quite manage those feelings now. She knew far too much about them. They were surprisingly good men, downright decent, which added to their seductive allure and had brought her here.

Shana crossed the room, forcing herself to walk casually as though she belonged. The slit in her pencil skirt allowed the black fabric to fall away from her leg, exposing a bit of her thigh. Mike and Cody’s attention dropped to her sheer stockings and spike heels.

Hard carnal interest flared on their faces.

A curious mixture of pleasure and caution rushed through Shana, draining her strength. She put her leather tote on the granite table, the smooth stone a soft rose color speckled with gray, black and brown.

The moment she slipped her hand under the tote’s flap, Mike said, “Hold it right there.”

He’d spoken quietly. However, his deep baritone filled the impressive space, demanding obedience.

Shana calmed herself as well as she could and lifted her face to his. At this hour, stubble shadowed his upper lip, chin and cheeks. His lashes were unspeakably long. His attention moved from the tote to her silk blouse, the color of black cherries. No one had to tell Shana that her nipples were hard and jutting against the fabric. Suddenly, Mike couldn’t seem to look anywhere else.

A wave of heat rushed to her neck, her arousal unruly.

He cleared his throat. His prominent Adam’s apple bobbed with his swallow. “Who are you?”

Time for the truth. Sort of.

Padre Kino and “The Pulse of the Earth” by Evey Brett

tourbutton_fiftyshadesofgreenLiving in southern Arizona and having done some research into its history, it was natural to set “The Pulse of the Earth” back in the days when missions and missionaries first came to the area, which back then was called Pimeria Alta, or “upper land of the Pimas.” One of the most influential missionaries was the intrepid Jesuit, Father Eusebio Kino, an astronomer and cartographer who started his career in 1687 and traveled over 50,000 miles on horseback, founded twenty-four missions, interacted with sixteen indigenous tribes and proved that Baja, California was not an island by conducting an overland expedition. He brought twenty cattle with him to establish the first of nineteen Rancherias (villages), and the herd eventually grew to over 70,000, essentially making him the first rancher in the area.

Padre Kino also introduced European fruits, grains, and seeds to aid in agricultural endeavors and worked to abolish the slavery forced upon the indigenous people. In my story, Brother Jacinto is a victim of the brutality that festered under Spanish rule. Wounded and blinded, he nonetheless has made a life for himself as a healer priest in a mission using the plant cures he learned as a boy. When the injured trader Andreas ends up in his care, Jacinto is initially distrustful, but Andreas’s kindness eventually wins him over. It’s in Jacinto’s treasured garden where they both find the healing they need.

Many indigenous people weren’t so lucky; disease and slavery ended up killing over two-thirds of the native population. The introduction of livestock damaged the land and forever changed their way of life. Kino’s legacy remains, most notably in the form of the missions, several of which still exist and are active. His remains are located in a crypt in Magdalena de Kino in Sonora, Mexico.

—Evey Brett

Excerpt from Fifty Shades of Green “The Pulse of the Earth”

Of course the meeting had to be here, the one place where Brother Jacinto felt most at ease. From his garden came nothing but love and healing, and Andreas was determined to keep it so.

They sat together on the blanket, the heat of their bodies warding away the chill. Brother Jacinto dipped his fingers in one of the oils and slowly rubbed it into Andreas’s skin. The sharp green scent relaxed him. It must have calmed Brother Jacinto as well, because he began to speak.

“I was apprenticed to be a curandero. A healer. My teacher was known for many miles, and dozens of people came to him for help. When the soldiers came looking for food, we gave it to them. They demanded more than we had, and grew angry when we could not produce it. So instead they forced us to build their forts and roads with almost nothing to eat. When we grew weak they called us lazy and beat us or . . . worse. When I called them ugly, they slashed my eyes. If Padre Eduardo hadn’t arrived when he did and freed us, I would be dead. I was the one who told him which herbs to use and how.”

The tale roused both sympathy for Brother Jacinto and ire against his captors. Andreas struggled against the instinct to take him in his arms and never let him out of his sight lest something terrible happen again. But when he tried to do just that, Brother Jacinto shook his head.

“I didn’t ask you here to be my protector.”

The rebuke, light as it was, still stung. For a long time, Andreas wasn’t sure what his role in this was. “I’m no fighter. I’m just a simple trader.”

“Not so simple. Driven to a solitary, wandering life because you never fit anywhere, but I don’t think you want to be alone any longer, do you?”

The priest knew more than Andreas had ever admitted to himself. Andreas held his breath as Brother Jacinto removed his linen shirt and drawers, leaving him wonderfully, gloriously nude. Lamplight flickered across his body, highlighting both scars and unbroken skin.

“One thing you must understand. I will never, ever belong to a man again. I will let no one but the Creator use me.”

And that was why he’d dedicated his life to the Creator and his garden. It was his choice, and neither would hurt him. In giving himself to Andreas, he trusted that Andreas would respect him and take nothing that wasn’t offered. “I understand.”

“Good.” Brother Jacinto smiled and drew him in for a kiss. Lust jolted through Andreas’s body. As quickly as he could he shed his smallclothes so that he was as naked as Brother Jacinto. He felt no shame, since the priest already knew his body so intimately.

Brother Jacinto urged him down onto his back. His hand flopped onto the dirt. This time, when he touched the ground, he felt the earth throbbing beneath his palm. At his swift intake of breath, Brother Jacinto laughed. “It’s amazing, isn’t it?”

Amazing wasn’t enough to cover everything Andreas felt. Life and energy poured through him and he was suddenly desperate to share everything with Brother Jacinto.
