She gazed out, almost awestruck, into the night. The sky was a backdrop of black velvet now. The peaks had disappeared. Meanwhile, lines of orange-gold lights stitched across the earth below, dividing the space into an uneven checkerboard. The roads pulsed with the movement of individual vehicles. Most of the city was low-rise but here and there a glittering tower poked upward, crowned with flashing red hazard lights.

“The view really is incredible. Thanks so much for your dinner invitation, Ted.”

“It’s our pleasure,” he replied. Standing behind her, he pointed out into the void. “We’re looking northwest now. See that building, two or three blocks from here? That’s the Silver Sands, our condo complex.”

“Close enough to walk.”

“People don’t usually walk in Las Vegas. It’s too hot.” He leaned closer. “We save our energy for other activities.”

Lust skittered through her.
