I breathed in the air he was breathing out, warm and sweet. The scream of hurt in my scalp made me want to wriggle but being held so firmly and confidently kept me still. The heat of the discomfort slipped down my nape and neck and over my shoulders, then combined with the lovely sensation of him stroking my back.

“Can you feel it?” he whispered. “Pain mixing with pleasure, the lines between the two blurring.”

I could feel it with every fiber of my being. My skin was alive with awareness, my breasts were heavy and desperate for stimulation, and between my legs I was buzzing for action. Good, hard man action, preferably of the naked, sweaty variety. “Yes,” I gasped.

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to Mid Week Tease! This week, I’m sharing a tease from my M/M military/interracial erotic romance novella, Desert Heat, which was originally part of the Unconditional Surrender boxed set. I’m going back to this now as I’m currently working on a follow up, which I’m hoping to release next month sometime.

Wilkes and the rest of the platoon dismounted the Mastiff vehicles and entered the Forward Operating Base that would be their home for most of the next six months. He had mixed feelings—the sense of trepidation he always got when he left the relative safety of Camp Bastion, immense relief to be out of Hunter’s clutches, and also happiness to be with a group of people he liked, doing a job he loved. Sometimes it was easy to lose sight of that fact—he did enjoy what he did for a living. It had its ups and downs, but so did every job. He’d yet to meet a single person who didn’t have a single complaint about their job or career.

Passing through the gates, he greeted the sentries, exchanging a few extra words with a rifleman he’d met on an exercise in the UK, then headed into the compound. It wasn’t huge, but the HESCO-block surrounded, barbed wire-topped camp was now home.

Immediately, he spotted the officer he was to replace —another young captain undoubtedly delighted to be heading home at the end of his tour—and strode over. Captain Tom Wolfe spotted him and grinned, turning to face his replacement with his hand outstretched.

“Wilkes? Good to see you, albeit very briefly.”

Wilkes grasped Wolfe’s hand. “You too. Got time to give me an update on the situation before you head off? I can’t believe this screw up—we’re a bloody week late coming out here. So much for a crossover period.”

Looking out through the camp’s gate toward the waiting vehicles, Wolfe said, “Absolutely. We’ve a lot to discuss and not much time.”

Smiling, Wilkes replied, “Great.”

Without another word, the two men headed for the mess tent, grabbed a cup of tea each and settled down at one of the tables. Wilkes dumped his bag down by his feet.

“So, how’s it been?” he asked.

“Kat, I’m here to say I’m sorry, all right? I was wrong, so wrong, to finish with you the way I did and go off with Alicia.”

“She dumped you, has she?” Katrina clenched her teeth, and felt the rage beginning to build inside her. If Tom thought he could come running back to her because his bimbo had ditched him, then he had another thing coming.

“No,” he said firmly, and, she suspected, honestly. “I finished with her, actually. When I realized that I wasn’t happy with her. She never made me feel the way you do, Kat. Not once. And I know, I know it’s my fault. I wanted something… different from what we had, or at least I thought I did. I couldn’t help thinking at the time that what we did was wrong, was weird. Abnormal, even. So when Alicia started flirting with me at work, I started thinking perhaps I should try for something normal. Like everybody else out there.”

He fixed her with his soulful gaze, and continued. “But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Yes, Alicia offered me normality, a vanilla relationship, but I soon discovered it couldn’t satisfy me. Sure, she could make me come in all the usual ways—”

“Ugh, I don’t want to hear this, Tom. I don’t want to hear about your sex life with someone else!”

“Sorry, Kat. Please, just let me finish?”

When she gave a curt nod, he carried on speaking.
