The Tulips of …Turkey?

Many of us have a pre-set image of “tulips,” that typically involve a field of them surrounding a windmill in Holland.

images-6While this is certainly a legit image, I’m here to tell you that if it were not for Turkey, those ubiquitous, cupped flowers of spring would not be in Europe, much less America.

The Turkish word for “tulip” is “Lale” (pronounced “Lah-ley”). Images of tulips abound in classic Turkish art, pottery, and cultural images. When you tour the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and peek into the “harem” (or “forbidden place”) there are entire walls of them, painstakingly painted onto tiles.

In the 16th Century, tulips were exported to Holland from the central parts of Turkey and became wildly popular. At one point the “tulipmania” was so rampant the Dutch government tried to outlaw the black market trading that had grown up around the prized bulbs, but eventually supply outstripped demand and they became just another pretty flower.

The years 1718-1730 were called the Tulip Era in Turkey, under Sultan Ahmed III and were marked by peace and happiness (for most) but ended as many of them do by a revolt which unseated the Sultan from his throne.

images-5And those really fancy ones you admire in the spring after spending freezing days in November planting the bulbs and praying the squirrels don’t eat them (the ones that seems to have “flames” shooting up their petal)? That sort of coloring was originally from a virus that messed with the solid pigmentation of the flower, passed into them by a louse.  Of course the ones we admire are merely hybridized versions of the solid color ones but those first really pretty ones? Merely sick.

One of the main female characters in The Turkish Delights series name is “Lale.” And while her parents certainly wish the “calm beauty” of the flower upon their only daughter, that was not what she was about. She was a wild kid from the beginning and when she loses one of her twin brothers in a terrorist attack she goes off the deep end, partying, drinking, screwing any man she can find who is willing and generally not living up to her name. It finally takes family intervention, and a move to the States away from Istanbul to settle her—but really it takes a hot, large, Greek Dom named Andreas….but you’ll have to read the books to find out how!

The Turkish Delights series is now available in e-book bundle format and in print under one beautiful cover.  The series is made up of 5 books, ranging in length from 9000 words (a long short story) to 35,000 (a novella) and encompasses decades in the life of the Deniz family.  It has a bit of everything including cougar action, forbidden yet fated love, man love, BDSM, intrigue, suspense, funny and poignant family dynamic and one of the flat-out happiest ever afters I have ever written.

I hope you get a chance to enjoy them soon!

Turkish DelightsA young American woman comes face to face with her destiny in Istanbul in the 1960’s and an epic dynasty is born.

When Vivian Kinkaid turns around in her college classroom and makes eye contact with a man who was once her forbidden childhood friend, her life is changed forever.

A sweeping saga of family, love, loss and recovery—The Turkish Delight series begins with a special sort of magic. Then  Madame Eve works her miracles for the Deniz family, but even she can’t overcome the harsh realities that force this Turkish/American family all to deal with tragedy when one of their own is ripped from their close-knit circle.

“The Turks” opens with best-selling classic romance for the ages.  Then ends with a thrilling novella that brings all the players back together.  Set in Istanbul, Las Vegas, and Southern California, The Turkish Delights series has it all—heat, heart, intrigue and a deep, family connection that transcends all barriers.

The fabulous Wendi Zwaduk is here today, telling us all about her characters, Torin and Zoe, who have appeared in both Smut in the City and Smut Alfresco. Take it away, Wendi…

Torin and Zoe…  A Love Story

First, I want to thank Lucy for having me here to talk about my characters. Always fun to hang out with you!! Plus its fun to talk about Zoe and Torin.

Zoe and Torin are from my stories in the Smut in the City Anthology and Smut Alfresco, but they actually started out before both stories. Let me tell you about them.

I had this scene, just one really, of these two people stuck in an elevator. She’s freaking out and he’s a rock star. That’s not why she’s freaking out. She’s claustrophobic. She also knows him because they had a relationship before the elevator scene. I didn’t have anything other than that scene, so I just jotted it down and let them percolate. When they wanted to talk, I’d listen.

I’m one of those writers that will see a sub call and the idea will right then spark. That’s what happened when I saw the call for SITC. Torin and Zoe came out of hiding and started talking. I wrote down their back story, then went back to the elevator. Turns out, the elevator scene was just a snippet (like I figured) and the relationship was much more complicated. I’d also seen an apartment complex in Cleveland, right off Lake Erie, that was the perfect setting for their reuniting. I forgot to mention, theirs, like a lot of my work, is a second chance romance.  Yes, they’re complicated people.

So who are they? Zoe is the submissive and Torin is her dom, but they don’t live the lifestyle 24/7. They also aren’t hardcore like some couples and that’s okay for them.  SITC let them work through some issues they had and Alfresco was the way for them to find out if the love they shared could last. And there’s sex among the daisies—something I’d love to do. I would.

I’ve not written the genesis of their relationship, but I’d like to. One of these days, or maybe even for a future Smut anthology, I’ll do it. I love these two and letting them tell how they got together in the first place feels like it’s the right thing to do…one of these days.

Here’s a snippet from Private Hideaway, from Smut Alfresco:

“Sixty-five. Remember that number.”

“Why?”

“That,” he inched the Jeep forward, “is our lot number.” Torin drove down the winding path to a secluded area of the campground. No other campers or vehicles were visible. He pulled into a gravel path next to a log cabin. Bright orange mums and daisies blossomed in front of the weathered grey building. “There. We’re off the grid. Kind of.” He whipped out a set of keys. “These are the keys to our private hideaway. No one will bother us because no one knows we’re here. We’ve got a dock and a whole open field down the hill a little ways. Plus, I have a surprise for you.”

Zoe rolled her eyes. They were standing on front of a wooden cottage in the middle of a deserted campground. What possible surprises could he have up his sleeve?

Torin slipped out of the vehicle and walked out of her line of sight. Within moments, he returned with a huge bouquet of roses. “These are for you, my love.”

“Thank you.” She buried her face in the sweet crimson blossoms. “You know how much I love these.” Zoe wrapped her free arm around his waist. “Question. How do you know we won’t be interrupted? We’ve had the paparazzi on our tails for the last six months.”

“I know and I’m sorry.” Torin offered his hand. “I want to go for a walk.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but he silenced her with a kiss. Zoe melted into his touch, threading her arms around his neck. His tongue tangled with hers. Torin hoisted her off the packed earth, then carried her into the cabin. The door slapped on the wall and the crack vibrated the tiny building. His footsteps thumped on the hardwood floor. A large bed, clad in fresh white sheets sat in the corner of the quaint room.

“Perfect.” Torin crossed the room to the bed. “I can’t wait.” He smoothed her skirt out of the way, then grabbed the strings at the sides of her panties. “Need you, babe.”

I’m delighted to announce Tenille Brown, who is dishing the dirt on her story in Smut Alfresco. Take it away, Tenille…

Blushed and Bruised

When I began writing Patches, it was between Halloween and Thanksgiving.  Though I’m not into writing holiday themed stories, I thought it would be good and different to touch on something I had never visited before in my writing, and that something happened to be not only a holiday decoration, but a holiday food.

Of course the characters in my story don’t get to eat… not the food, anyway.

The delicacy I’m referring to here is pumpkins, and not just pumpkins, but pumpkin patches.  And since the call for Smut Alfresco specified outdoor sex, I thought about how interesting it would be to write and read about hot, in the wild sex surrounded by large, luscious pumpkins.

In addition to exploring new scenery in this story, I also put together two characters who had already had a history together, but didn’t realize they both needed closure until they met again, in the male character’s pumpkin patch of all places.

But at the root of it all, my reason and inspiration for writing Patches was this:

Who wouldn’t want to be bent over or laid on top a picnic table beneath the stars?  Who wouldn’t want to spank their mouthy ex-lover on his own turf?

Have I said too much…or not enough?

You should see for yourself…

Daryl – Thought I’d take a moment and sit down with my heroine – Capri – from my latest – soon to be released – Capri’s Fate. So, Capri, tell the readers something about yourself.

Capri – Hmmm. Well, I was born and raised in Michigan and I’m a junior vice-president at Felkins International.

Daryl – How did you meet your Fate?

Capri – My best friend, Kat, dragged me to sex toys convention. I’m still blushing. I’ve never been to one before. While I was as there, a voice spoke to me, then it followed me around the convention centre and then it followed me home.

Daryl – What happened next?

Capri – I thought about calling the police. There are stalker laws. But the thought of trying to explain this whole situation seemed…let’s just say, it wouldn’t be good for my career to be thought of as a bit crazy.

Daryl – So, I ask again – what happened next?

Capri – Well…ummm, the voice made incredible love to me.

Daryl – Excuse me??

Capri – You heard me. You wrote it. A sexy voice made such sweet love to me, that any mortal human male is going to seem…well, it’s going to be hard for them to live up to that experience.

Daryl – Did you send a thank you card to your friend Kat?

Capri – I should, shouldn’t I?

Daryl – I know you’re a busy business woman, so I’ll let you get back to work. Thanks for letting me chat with you.

Capri – Pleasure’s all mine.

Excerpt:

My erotic adventure began the minute he whispered, “Do you happen to own a pair of red fuzzy handcuffs?”

Well okay, it didn’t exactly start there. If I’m going to be perfectly honest, I think it started with Kat’s text – “Meet me at – insert name of five-star restaurant here.” Kat is always getting me to take her out for expensive dinners. I don’t mind, I’m a highly paid executive, in a very large corporation, while she’s a receptionist in a small dental office. Besides, I like good food and I like her company.

Kat and I have been BFFs since third grade. We were in each other’s wedding parties, and cried on each other’s shoulders at our subsequent divorces. Now, we’re each other’s go to person whenever the mood strikes. Obviously, the mood struck and it involved my credit card. I texted back a reply –”Xavier’s. 6 pm.”

~ * * ~

Kat waited outside the restaurant when my cab pulled up to the curb.  “Timing or what? I just got here.”

We did the requisite cheek kiss then walked up to the Maitre D’. He smiled his, I– must-be-friendly-because-they’re-guests, smile and escorted us to our table. We ordered drinks and chatted. We talked about  the weather, her new dress, my job – you know, just old – no, scratch old, put longtime – girlfriend stuff.

After a diet conscious meal, followed by a calorie-loaded dessert, we waited outside for a taxi.

“Do you trust me?” With a goofy grin on her face, Kat’s mellowed-from-too-much-wine, dark chocolate eyes gazed at me.

I’d seen that innocent demeanor before; it meant nothing but trouble. I was a bit wary. Okay! A lot wary. The last time she’d gawked at me like that and asked the same brainless question, we ended up at a frat house beer slosh during Homecoming and I wasn’t in college anymore.

A cab pulled up and stopped. She grabbed my arm and dragged me into the cab. “Convention Center.”

“What’s at the convention center?” I slid next to her and shut the car door.

“That’s the trust me bit.” She raised her fingers and flicked them  up and down at the words trust me.

You have to love air-quotes.

I checked my Blackberry for messages then glanced at her. “Is this going to get me arrested? Again?”

She shook her head.

“Is it going to get me hit on—again—by horny, beer-soaked, college drunks?”

Kat giggled.

“Is that a yes or a no?”

vampirerotiquewintertourInterview with Varya from Enslave by Felicity Heaton

It’s great to be here today as part of my Vampirerotique Winter Tour celebrating the series and my latest release, Bewitch.

Today, I’ll be talking to the heroine of the fourth book in the Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series, the sassy, sexy succubus Varya.

A succubus with several centuries of life and even a fae king notched on her headboard, Varya is all about fun. She embraces everything her species adores—passion, love, debauchery and decadence—but has learned not to take things too far over the past century. Her kiss is enough to melt most men, and sex with her will kill all but the strongest. Having grown tired of killing men with her passion, she has focused on gaining sustenance through less lethal means. She’s always looking for a party, but like any good succubus, she follows the rules of her clan, that is until she decides to take a risk and teleport into Vampirerotique during one of the performances. When the glamour keeping her invisible weakens, alerting any vampire over several centuries old to her presence, Varya ends up locking eyes with a sensual vampire who heats her blood and sets body on fire, but who is forbidden and might just be the end of her—Andreu.

Read on to find out more about Varya from the succubus herself.

vet-varyaFH: I have a very sassy succubus here with me today. Because she’s a fae, and a fae’s real name gives people power over them, I can’t use her real name. I’ll be using her nickname, Chica. So, I have Chica here with me today to talk about her book, Enslave. Firstly, can you tell us a little about yourself?

CHICA: Thank you for understanding about the name thing. A lot of people don’t get it. When it became clear that I would be at Vampirerotique with Andreu for a while, I decided to choose a name for myself so others knew what to call me. Andreu always calls me Chica, so I chose that as my name. I’m a succubus and, to be honest, I had grown a bit tired of life. My friends said it was something all succubi went through and I was hopeful that it was and I would find my enthusiasm again. It probably seems so silly to hear that I was a succubus without any drive to feed through sex, but I was. It can get boring after several hundred years. Of course, then I met Andreu!

FH: How did you meet and how did you feel about him initially?

CHICA: Oh, he’s so hot. Isn’t he? The moment I set eyes on him, I knew I had to have a taste. He’s sex made flesh and just gorgeous. I know he wears shadows and that I should have stayed away from him, but boy am I glad that I didn’t. That man knows how to do naughty. *purrs* He is made by the gods just for me. I swear.

FH: So, you’re saying that you liked him?

CHICA: Yes, I guess I am. Sorry. I get a little excited whenever I think about my naughty vampire.

FH: That’s good though. He really seems to have restored your lust for life. You mentioned that Andreu wears shadows. That means he has a black aura and you cannot read his feelings, and by clan law you’re not allowed to interact with him. Was it hard for you at first?

CHICA: Very. I tried to stay away from him because I wasn’t sure why my clan believed that shadowed males were dangerous. When I found out why, I tried even harder to keep away, but something about Andreu kept drawing me back to him. I just couldn’t resist him. I didn’t care if I was risking my life. I had to keep coming back for another taste. I wanted him so badly.

FH: And in the end you got him, but it wasn’t easy on either of you. How has life been since the events that happened and brought you together?

CHICA: I’m becoming accustomed to life at the theatre. Antoine lets me watch the practices where only young vampires are on the stage. They can’t sense that I’m different so it doesn’t unsettle them. Andreu watches the performances with me and things tend to get a little hot and heavy. *giggles* I don’t think either of us can help ourselves. I’ve been growing used to being around Payne and the others, and I think the older performers at the theatre are getting used to me being around too. Victor always runs in the opposite direction whenever he sees me though. Andreu thinks it’s funny.

FH: Speaking of thinking things are funny, I’ve heard from some of the other women at the theatre that you’ve formed a sort of troublemaking pack with Snow.

CHICA: Snow is a charmer, and he’s definitely our leader. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. He’s naughty and has a very wicked streak when he’s bored. You should see him taunt his brother. I swear, if any one of us tried to do that to Antoine, the aristocrat would have our heads. If it’s Snow and Sera annoying him, he just takes it in his stride. We have some new recruits now too. Callum has finally convinced Kristina to move into the theatre. All of us women have vowed to keep her safe. I think Snow will lead the protect-Kristina pack too. He always takes care of us ‘females’. I think he does it so we’ll read to him and keep him company while the men are busy with the business.

FH: Snow does like company and I’m glad that he has you all to stop him from being bored. I couldn’t imagine what he goes through being stuck in the theatre, but then he’s not alone in that anymore. I suppose we’ll be seeing more of you in other stories in the series?

CHICA: Oh, absolutely. I intend to cause as much trouble as I can and that means I’ll be popping up all over the place!

FH: Sounds like you’ll be having lots of fun. I’ll finish on a question I ask all interviewees. Describe yourself in one word?

CHICA: Trouble. *grins*

FH: That is very apt and suits you so much. Thank you for meeting with me today and chatting.

CHICA: Thank you for having me! Who are you interviewing next? Andreu?

FH: I’ll be interviewing your ‘naughty vampire’ later. I have to interview Payne next.

CHICA: Oh, that should be interesting. He’s been in a terrible mood this week. I don’t think he’s getting enough, if you know what I mean.

FH: *laughs* I’ll have to ask him about it. Catch you later, Troublemaker!

CHICA: *giggles and disappears*

FH: I can see that interviewing Payne isn’t going to be fun at all.

I hope you have all enjoyed this insight into Enslave and life at Vampirerotique through the eyes of one of the sassy heroines!

The Truth About Being an Erotica Writer

When I am asked to give talks about writing erotica, I am still surprised at the myths surrounding the genre.  Some people think (or prefer to) that I have to get dressed up in a rubber catsuit and heels to get “in the mood”.  A nice idea, but not very practical.  Do I fantasise about sex, or reach for my trusty vibrator before I switch on the laptop?  Yes, sometimes.  Or do I grab a notebook and jot down a few sentences whilst in the throes of coitus? Now that would be really bad manners.….

On the whole, writing smutty tales is just like any other kind of writing.  (I wonder if horror writers are assumed to perform all manner of unsavoury actions before putting pen to paper?  I doubt it).  However, cultivating mystique around creating sensual prose does have a certain appeal.

When I decided to have a website for my erotic writing, I had a good look at what other erotica writers did (in the late 90s, erotica writers were nothing like as up front and public as they are now, and I am delighted that there is so much less secrecy around the genre).  There seemed to be two opposite routes to follow.  Either to use my own name and talk about my academic and literary qualifications and focus on the more scholarly aspects of writing erotica, or to promote my alter ego as a hot babe, and really market myself as an all-round erotic package.  In fact, on one of the early blogs, an erotic writer described herself lying naked on her lawn on a summer day, typing her naughty prose onto her laptop, with the possibility of a neighbour spying on her.  That made me smile……I tried to find a happy medium, although when I started, I did emphasise the “sexy” aspects of my personality (pole dance teacher, ex-glamour model and naturist, swinger, etc.) and I used a photo of my body from the waist down, showing plenty of pert arse (14 years on and I would no longer post my rather less firm butt for all to see!).  Over the years, my confidence slowly grew and I gradually changed the emphasis of the site towards the writing.

All writing comes from the imagination, the unconscious.  Whatever we are writing about.  However, that isn’t to say that we don’t trawl our memories and personal experiences to provide ideas and research material.  Generally, the kind of erotica I enjoy writing is fantasy rooted in potential reality, if that makes sense.  The thought that it could happen is what can turn us on.  The possibility, the potential.  That is what is exciting.  Or I might take actual events and characters and then ask, “What if?” That is a lot of fun to write – and, hopefully, to read.  Occasionally, I go deeper, so to speak, and explore the beauty and complexity of BDSM relationships.

Will I be writing erotica 10 years from now?  5? 3? 1?  Maybe not.  There are probably a few more stories I need to finish and a trilogy of novellas I began a year ago but have not progressed.  I am nowhere near as prolific as I used to be.  Recently, I was in conversation with a composer who talked of some artists and writers who might only have so much to say, who may have already mined the vein of their particular creativity.  A friend, who is one of the most amazing and exquisite dancers and performers  I have ever seen, informed me that after 15 years, she no longer has the desire to dance.  She has taken it as far as she feels she can and now wants to explore new creative avenues in different fields.

Ask me again this time next year……
