An Interview with Sabrina York (@sabrina_york)

I’m delighted to welcome Sabrina York to the site, where she’s telling all about writing full time, Regency romance and George Clooney. Take it away, Sabrina…

Tell us about yourself. Both your writing self and your non-writing self. What are your interests and hobbies? Do you have a day job, etc?

Lucy, thank you so much for having me! I am excited to meet your readers!

I am happy to report that as of January 2014, I am writing full time. It was a scary step to take, and certainly required our family to tighten the belt here and there, but I couldn’t be more delighted. I love writing and promo and everything involved with this business—and my readers are thrilled because I can write so much faster.

It’s amazing what you can do when you DON’T have to stop and leave your characters (hanging over a cliff) to go work for someone else for 8 hours.

As far as that goes, I used to have a lot of hobbies. Beading and cooking and working with glass…but now that I am writing full time, my days are fuller than ever. I rarely have time to take a break. I always have books to write, manuscripts to edit, chats, events, appearances, promo… Sigh. It’s never ending, but I love it! Occasionally I collapse on the sofa and watch TV. But not very often.

Give us the background on your latest release.

darkdukeMy most recent release is a STEAMY Regency romance. It’s the 3rd book in the Noble Passions series from Ellora’s Cave. I loved writing this book. It was one of the miraculous books that seemed to flow out with no effort on my part (until we came to the editing, of course).

I’ve always been a fan of Regencies. I’ve read so many I thought I knew everything there was to know about this era.

I was wrong.

In the course of editing, I discovered I had a few of the details wrong. In the first book, Folly, I originally had a scorching scene where Ethan commands Eleanor to strip down to her underwear. Imagine my horror when the final line editor informed me, they didn’t wear underwear during this period!

I know. I had to rewrite the entire scene. I was devastated. (Trust me, it was super hot).

Now, working on Book 4, Brigand, I know better. My prim and proper ladies are going commando under their stays. And the Tantalus I try to thrust into every book? The Tantalus, which did not make an appearance until the Victorian era? Yeah, got rid of that too.

I was lucky to have had good editors along the road. The series was fun to write, and is burning up the charts at Amazon. I couldn’t be happier.

How did you get started with writing? And what was your route to publication like?

I have been writing my whole life. As long as I can remember! For years I wrote nothing but romance—everything from historical to contemporary to futuristic—and I also played around with writing sexy shorts.

I joined a local RWA chapter and developed a cadre of friends who also wrote romance. We critiqued each others’ work. One of them told me about a contest for sexy shorts and she urged me to enter. So I did. I entered three titles. My books all finaled and the final judge—and editor from Ellora’s Cave—bought them all.

adamsobsessionMy first book, Adam’s Obsession was published in April of 2012. Since then, I have released over 20 titles, contemporary & regency romance, and fantasy, ranging from short stories to novels.  Most of my titles are with publishers like Ellora’s Cave and Decadent Publishing, but I also have a self published series about a group of friends getting into all kinds of sexy situations on (the fictional) Tryst Island in the Pacific Northwest, where I live.

My favorite part of being a writer is connecting with readers and I LOVE finding new readers. If you’d like to check out my work, you can download my free teaser book which will give you a taste of my books in blurbs, excerpts and comments from readers.

What are you currently working on?

I always have multiple projects in the works. Right now I am writing Book 6 of the Tryst Island series, Editing the 4th book in the Noble Passions (Regency) Series and editing Snow Angels, part of the Calendar Men Series from Decadent Publishing. I’m part of the steamy cowboy anthology, Cowboy Heat, from Cleis Press which is coming out on March 18th and I am working on promo for that as well.

On top of all that, I am writing and polishing a number of other steamy romances!

Did I mention how fun my job is??

dragonfly-kissesDo you have a particular Muse for your writing? Do any of your characters bear startling resemblances to sexy celebrities or people you admire?

We all have muses, and we bow before them. My Heart Hero—the guy I have in mind when I write—isn’t a person I could point out. Rather the hero I have developed in my mind after reading THOUSANDS of other romances. He’s tall and dark and a little stubborn. He has a sense of humour and he loves without reservation. He may change a bit from book to book, but in my heart, he’s the same guy…just wearing a different, shall we say, outfit.

I suppose any of these guys would do: http://www.pinterest.com/sabrinayork/beautiful-bodies/ or any of these guys: http://www.pinterest.com/sabrinayork/faces/

Where do you see yourself in five years? Both writing-wise and non-writing-wise?

I hope I am still writing. I hope I am still continuing to expand my readership. My husband hopes I am making enough money to buy him a boat.

And now for some silly questions…

Muscled or skinny? MUSCLED

Tall or short? TALL

Boxers or briefs? BOXERS

Moustache or beard? BEARD

Long hair or shaven head? LONG HAIR

Tattoos or piercings? TATS 4 SURE

Intelligent or funny? BOTH

Blond, brunette or red head? DARK HAIR! YUM

Hottest celebrity (tell us why, if you like)? CLOONEY. IS THERE ANY OTHER?

Top same-sex crush (or opposite sex if you already like same-sex!) ANGELINA JOLIE BECAUSE SHE’S A BADASS

Most disliked celebrity (tell us why, if you like) ANY ONE WHO DOESN’T HONOR THE PRIVELEDGE

Favourite food BACON

Favourite book (tell us why, if you like)

Favourite place in the world (tell us why, if you like) VEGAS. BECAUSE ANYTHING GOES, BABY!

Dark Duke

Sabrina York

Noble Passions, Book Three

Edward Wyeth, the Dark Duke of Moncrieff’s life has been turned on its end. His well-ordered home has been invaded. By destitute relatives. From Scotland. How on earth can he write Lord Hedon’s salacious novels with hellions battling in the garden and starting fires in the library? But with the onslaught has come a delicious diversion. His cousin’s companion, the surprisingly intriguing Kaitlin MacAllister. He is determined to seduce her. Using her desperate need for funds and her talents as an artist, he convinces her to draw naughty pictures for his naughtier books…and he draws her into his decadent web.

But Kaitlin has a secret. She’s fled Scotland—and a very determined betrothed. When Edward’s cousin is kidnapped and held in her stead, Kaitlin is honor bound to return to her homeland and rescue her—much to Edward’s chagrin.

Because suddenly he can’t bear the thought of Kaitlin marrying another man. He can’t bear the thought of losing her at all.

Edward skirted the mêlée in the garden and made his way to the far end of the estate, where there was nothing but flowers and trees and a placid little pond. Nothing to attract diminutive fiends bent on mischief. He would sit in the folly until his temperature returned to normal.

Perhaps until spring.

Dear God. He’d had no idea having the Wyeths of Perth take over his house would be such a nightmare. If he had suspected as much, he would have turned them away at the start. They would probably have crawled in under the door. Through the cracks in the flue. Vermin had a way of finding entrance.

But now. Now they were here.

Entrenched.

He had to get rid of them.

Perhaps he could send them back to Scotland.

Scotland would revile him for it, but he had little use for rocky tors, lochs and sheep.

Then he thought of Violet and his heart lurched. It would crush her to be trundled back to what she referred to as “the bleak wilderness.” She was looking forward to a glittering season in London. She was seventeen. She needed a husband. A husband of quality. That might be difficult to find in the wilds of Scotland.

And Ned. Ned was twenty. He was just starting to find his way with the ton. He’d made some friends—decent fellows. He’d even been receiving invitations to game at White’s.

The two of them—the normal two—deserved better than being lumped in with the rest.

He whacked at a rosebud as he passed. It exploded into a flutter of petals. He refused to feel any sympathy.

He couldn’t send them packing.

Then what?

Hell. He was a duke of the realm. He had six houses spread throughout the empire. Why hadn’t he thought to purchase a spare in London?

Aha!

That was brilliant.

He would. He’d buy them their own house. Move them all, lock stock and—well, maybe not the barrels, as the older boys did like to drink. He’d move them all into their own domicile.

With Aunt Hortense. Let her manage them.

His life would once again be orderly. He would be the master of his own abode. Free to pursue the life of a wealthy dilettante.

Perfect.

He rounded the bend with a satisfied smile on his face. The trickle of the fountain in the pond was a balm to his tormented soul. Birds sang in the trees. The sun—well, it almost shone. It was a beautiful day.

Soon, the world would be right again.

Soon, they would all be gone.

He skipped up the steps of the folly with a lightness of heart he hadn’t felt in ages. A book on the bench snagged his attention and his mood dipped, but only a bit. Someone had been here. But they were gone.

He picked it up and flipped through it and stilled.

Good God.

It was a sketch book.

The first page was an attempt at this scene. The flowers and trees, the pond and the little fountain. Not very good. But the second arrested his attention. It was a simple line drawing of Violet. And it was stunning. The artist had managed to depict her beauty, but also captured that glint in her eye, the particular quirk of her lips. Her soul.

The next sketch was one of Ned, showing a brash young man, standing insouciantly with his hands shoved into his pockets, whistling a silent tune. The next was of the twins—whatever their names were—dark heads together plotting some manner of mayhem.

It was so realistic Edward expected them to leap from the page and whack him with a cricket bat.

But it was the last sketch in the book that stole his breath. It was a portrait, in profile. His own face. But not an Edward he would ever recognize. This man was heroic, tragic, a solitary soldier. It was only a few lines drawn in charcoal, but it revealed so much about him. Things he didn’t want anyone to ever know.

It was horrifying. And remarkable.

“Your Grace.”

He snapped the book shut and spun around.

Of course. What’s her name. The girl. The owl. From last night.

“Oh, you found it.” She stepped into the folly and took the book from his hands. He did not know why he let it go.

“You left it here.” An accusation. Really? He hadn’t intended for it to come out like that.

She chuckled. “I had to go rescue Hamish. I was coming back.”

“What…why did you have to rescue Hamish?” This was her work? She saw him like that? And hell, she was a damn fine hand. How he would love to turn such talent to…darker purposes. What a pity she was such a prude. The kind of work he could offer her would make her rich—rich enough to quit serving as Violet’s companion.

But she would never do it. No decent woman would.

He must be crazed, truly crazed, to even think on it.

The gripping sketch of his wounded countenance lingered in his brain. If she could do that, if she could see through to his soul and bring it to life on paper—

“And then he got stuck. In the tree. So I had to rescue him.”

Lord. She’d been talking. He’d missed the entire explanation. No matter. The question had been purely rhetorical.

“How long have you been drawing?”

She winced, clutched the book to her breast. He recalled what fine breasts they were. “I… What?”

“How long have you been drawing? You’re quite good.”

“You looked at my book?” She squawked as though he’d just admitted to peering up her skirts. The lemony face returned. A beetled brow and pursed lips. It was, upon reflection, rather adorable.

“It was lying here.”

“You shouldn’t look at someone’s sketchbook.”

“You shouldn’t leave it where it can be found.” He crossed his arms over his chest and grinned at her. Damn, he loved her accent.

She sputtered. “I told you. Hamish and Tay—”

“Tay?”

“Taylor. Hamish and Taylor were building a fort in a tree—”

“Yes. Yes. I know. You had to rescue him. Tell me, have they always been this much trouble?”

She blew out a breath. “You have no idea.”

They both laughed. It was a nice moment, because it seemed, for that brief flash of time, they were friends, bound in mutual misery.

And then he went and ruined it by letting his lust intrude. “So tell me, what did you think of that book?”

She tipped her head. “What book?”

“The one I gave you last night.”

She blinked several times, as though she had to try very hard to remember. “Oh. That book. I didn’t read it.”

He stepped closer. “Ah. You like to look at the pictures, then?” He knew the sort.

“Look at the… What? No, your Grace—”

“Edward.” He infused his voice with a low thrum.

Your Grace. I didn’t have a chance to open it.”

Why petulance curled within him, he had no clue. “What do you mean you didn’t have a chance to open it?” She was supposed to have read it. Or at least looked at the pictures. She was supposed to be gazing at him, right now, with a dewy look.

She brushed an invisible speck from her skirt. “There was…a distraction.”

Well hell. “What kind of distraction?”

Her lips pursed. The look she shot him was not dewy in the slightest.

Still, he wanted to kiss her.

He wasn’t sure why. She was certainly not the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. But her face had character and charm—especially when she smiled. Her figure was full—the way he liked them—but she didn’t show it off to its best effect. In fact, if he hadn’t known what lay beneath the thick layers of crinoline and bombazine, he would have been fooled. She was prickly as a hedgehog and smacked him down at every turn.

So why did he want to pull her into his arms and smother her mouth with his?

Perhaps because of all those things.

Then again, perhaps just because.

So he did.

He took the girl—whose name he could not remember, whose face he could not forget—into his arms and kissed her. It was a gentle buss, as kisses went, but extremely sublime. Because he’d surprised her.

Her lips were open, as though poised to speak. He took full advantage, sweeping in his tongue to dab at hers, nibbling and licking and tasting her sweet breath.

The prick at his side was not a surprise. He’d expected it.

He lifted his head and stared down into her eyes. Her expression was dazed and determined and perhaps a little dewy. “Not this time, darling,” he murmured. He took the knife from her hand and tossed it aside and then pulled her more fully against him.

And ah. She was soft. Sweet. Her breasts pressed against his chest. Her hips molded the cradle of his groin. Of course, he was the one doing the molding, but she didn’t fight him.

No. She sighed and tipped her head to the side so he could deepen the kiss. She tasted like ambrosia. A tantalizing flavor of cinnamon and woman and surrender. His ardor rose, and with it, his cock. He rubbed it against her belly.

She stiffened and tried to push away, muttering something into his mouth that sounded like “No.”

He changed his tack, running his lips down her cheek and along the line of her jaw to nestle in the crook of her neck. She shuddered. Some groan-like sound emanated from her throat. She clutched at his hair.

Thusly encouraged, he sucked at the tender skin of her neck. Nipped.

“Oh! Saints preserve us,” she whispered.

“The saints don’t care,” he responded, switching to the other side of her neck. He found a spot that delighted her even more and feasted there. In her distraction, she didn’t stop the palm skimming over her ribs to cup a breast.

He encased her. Ah. Exquisite. Full and round and pliable. He thumbed a nipple, testing its rigidity. She dipped as her knees gave way. He caught her. Swung her up in his arms and carried her to the bench.

From long experience, he knew better than to give a woman a moment to think. So as soon as he had her settled across his lap and firmly braced against the wall of the folly, he kissed her again. With one hand, he stroked her nipples while with the other, he slowly drew up her skirts.

An Interview with Lynn Crain (@oddlynn3)

I’m delighted to have Lynn Crain on my site today, where she talks about museums in Vienna, Hugh Jackman and Chris Hemsworth. Take it away, Lynn!

BanSt250x300-HarvesterTell us about yourself. Both your writing self and your non-writing self. What are your interests and hobbies? Do you have a day job, etc?

I have to chuckle at this as it seems to be a question on every author interview. I see myself as a very normal person who just happens to be a writer. I know that some people think being a writer is glamorous and all but in reality I may have a day where inspiration hits me and I never get out of my pajamas. I can tell you I’m older than you think and have been married to the same guy for nearly 30 years. We have two full grown sons, a wonderful daughter-in-law and fantastic twin grandsons. And did I mention…we’ve run away from home to live in Vienna, Austria. My main hobby right now is to visit every museum in Vienna and trust me there are more than I thought. We’ve made it a Sunday habit that I really enjoy. I love to hike, catch up on TV when I’m in the States and of course, read.

I am also blessed with such a wonderful guy that when he gave me an offer to write full time about eight years ago, I took it. So my days are filled with writing all the fabulous things I want.

Give us the background on your latest release.

My latest release was The Harvester and it has a very unique background story. A group of us writers decided to have a girl’s night out by going to Thunder from Downunder. It’s basically a male revue show and from that the Girl’s Night Out series was born. There will be a couple of other books from some other authors but I have the first two slots.

And when they wanted me to decide on just one man to base my hero on, I was in a quandary. See, I loved a couple of them…and so did my heroine.

How did you get started with writing? And what was your route to publication like?

To be honest, now, I can’t remember a time I didn’t write. I started in earnest when I was twelve because I wanted to be the next Margaret Mitchell. I just knew I had a novel in me to rival Gone With The Wind. And I would say that my path to publication was pretty typical. I had a lot of rejections, won or finalled in a few romance writing contests and had almost given up. Then my Dad told me my Mom, who had Alzheimer’s at the time, would kick my butt if she ever thought I’d given up my writing to help care for her. That incident jump started me to push even harder. A friend encouraged me to submit to a specific publisher and finally, I agreed and in 2005, my first book was traditionally epublished. Since then I have published by a variety of publishers and have done a few books via the indie route as well. To date, I have twenty books published with anticipated five to eight more being published this year.

This past year, I also got an agent and she’ll be shopping a really hot series to some publishers in NYC. So, I guess you could say, I have arrived.

What are you currently working on?

I normally work on about three to four stories at a time. Currently, I’m working on a new adult series, completing book 2 in the Girls’ Night Out series as well as working on a couple of short stories for various places.

Do you have a particular Muse for your writing? Do any of your characters bear startling resemblances to sexy celebrities or people you admire?

I don’t really have a Muse for writing but I absolutely have to listen to music while I write. And I listen to everything from show tunes to hard rock in varying degrees of loudness.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Both writing-wise and non-writing-wise?

Hmmm. This is a hard one. I know we only have two more years here in Vienna and then it’s kinda hard to know where exactly we’ll be. Home will always be in Nevada and I will still be writing the stories I love. I see myself have a few NYC books under my belt by then and hopefully another twenty stories out there for everyone to read.

And now for some silly questions…

Muscled or skinny? Lean but muscled.

Tall or short? Tall.

Boxers or briefs? Boxers.

Moustache or beard? Moustache.

Long hair or shaven head? Long hair.

Tattoos or piercings? Tattoos.

Intelligent or funny? Both.

Blond, brunette or red head? Geez…this one is hard…I’ve gone out with all of these guys but married a blone.

Hottest celebrity (tell us why, if you like)?

Actually I have two…First, Hugh Jackman. I do like the way he looks obviously but he seems so normal otherwise when you see him with his kids and especially when he talks about his wife.  Second, Chris Hemsworth. This guy shares a lot of attributes with my husband and reminds me of a younger him. He’s just yummy.

Top same-sex crush (or opposite sex if you already like same-sex!)

If I had to pick a girl, it would be Mila Kunis. Again, she seems like a real person and there was one interview that sealed it for me concerning Justin Timberlake and their Friends with Benefits tour. She was awesome.

Most disliked celebrity (tell us why, if you like)

There are very few I dislike but the ones I do are arrogant jerks and some of the ones that come to mind are Alec Baldwin and Mickey O’Rourke. Now I don’t mind not liking something, just don’t be a jerk to people about it. I haven’t watched them in anything for years. Except Iron Man when Mickey was in it and it made me think he might have changed a little.

Favourite food

This is hard. I like food and I have a favourite desert as well as other dishes. I love anything like green olives or dill pickles. Here they have the Naschmarkt and you can get samples of all sort of green olives, stuffed and more. Right now, I’m loving something called an Esterhazey Tort…just scrumptious!

Favourite book (tell us why, if you like)

I love a lot of books and this is a really hard one. All time favourite would be Gone With The Wind and currently, I’m really digging my friend Gini Koch’s Alien series.

Favourite place in the world (tell us why, if you like)

I love Scotland best of all and the closest thing in the States to me would be Montana.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I think that you’ve covered everything most excellently…thanks for having me!

The HarvesterBlurb:

Princess Sky Xera Nerezsh came to earth to avoid the normal succession to the throne. Being the oldest daughter, she will be required to murder her mother in order to secure her path to power. Sky loves her mother and refuses this way, choosing instead to disappear in the vast reaches of space. When her past collides with her present, she has to think quick on her feet, claim two men and a whole planet just to avoid the inevitable: a meeting with her mother. Along the way, she discovers true love and a burning need to be there for them always. Now if the other Harvesters can just keep to themselves, they’ll have no problems. But who said true love was ever easy.

Excerpt:

Boldness took hold of Sky and she wanted to touch them more, to fondle their packages just as if she had been a real Harvester again. Part of the job was to insure everything was in proper order. Sliding her hand down Jax’s front, she moved her hand under his kilt and a moan of pleasure rewarded her. She moved closer and felt the weight of his penis in her hand. It would be more than adequate in size once fully excited.

The man turned over and arched his cock toward her just a little. Sky moved her thumb across the tip and felt the organ jump a little. Wait a minute…she had barely enough time to get the words out in her mind when she found herself flat on her back as violet eyes moved over her.

“I want to know just what the hell game you’re playing.”

She stared at him a moment and stayed completely still. “No game.”

“Lady, you should have a better explanation than that one.”

She felt another set of hands on her body and she creamed herself in anticipation as they continued up her body.

“Jax…let’s just do her right now…screw the explanation.”

Stealing Cupid's BowTell us about yourself. Both your writing self and your non-writing self. What are your interests and hobbies? Do you have a day job, etc?

I wouldn’t classify myself as conservative but that is somehow the first impression I usually make. Sigh. During the day I work as a pharmaceutical sales representative so I have a well-developed outgoing side to my personality. But I think what has made me good at my day job is my shy writer’s side that is observant and always listening. I love to travel and have visited many countries. I have even travelled by myself. I usually meet all kinds of people right away when I travel so I am never actually alone, lol. I have many hobbies. At the moment my top ones are yoga, snowboarding, bartending and having fun with my two dogs.

Give us the background on your latest release.

I remember telling my parents about my idea for this book. We had gone to dinner and had some wine and I felt brave enough to tell them about my idea. I don’t think they took me seriously at the time but they certainly do now. Lol. Valentine’s Day has always been my favourite day of the year. I celebrate it whether I am single or not. What could be better than a day dedicated to love? One year I found myself wondering what would happen if someone stole Cupid’s bow and this book was the result of my random musings.

How did you get started with writing? And what was your route to publication like?

I dabbled on and off with writing since I was very young. I always tell people that 40 is the year that I finally took myself seriously and finished my first book. The second, third and fourth ones followed soon after. My first book was accepted by a publisher I pitched to at a writer’s conference and the others were accepted through online submission. I think I have been luckier than some others though and I credit my sales background with some of my rapid success. Once I have a finished product (a manuscript) I know what to do with it. Go out and sell it!

What are you currently working on?

I currently have in progress a novella about a genie who has just been freed from her bottle and who is exploring our modern world. And I also am working on a novel that is part of an anthology called The Seven Deadly Sins. My book is based on the sin of Envy. *rubs hands together and chuckles deviously* I also just finished a short story titled Extreme Heat that was accepted by Evernight Publishing and should be coming out soon.

Do you have a particular Muse for your writing? Do any of your characters bear startling resemblances to sexy celebrities or people you admire?

I wish I could say there was a muse, I would certainly give her a name. 🙂 I have always had an active imagination and it sparks at the most random times. I remember being in a movie theatre once and having my thoughts stimulated by a preview. I then began typing notes furiously into my iPhone despite the glares of people seated near me. (that story will be coming in a post-apocalyptic series I am working on). My characters bear a startling resemblance to pictures of models I find online…lol. We writers find it easier to have a picture in front of us when we are trying to remember what our characters looked like than referring to our notes. I am grateful for the many catalogues that come to my house.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Both writing-wise and non-writing-wise?

In less than five years I plan to be writing full-time and living in Germany. That has always been my dream! I plan to have audiobooks made for each book I write. Rock Star Ex is already available as an audio book and two more are on their way. It’s very exciting! I also hope that some of my work will be turned into movies or TV shows. I also see myself as being very happy, healthy and joyful through all of 2014.

And now for some silly questions…

Muscled or skinny? I like swimmer build which is the happy middle of these two.

Tall or short? I am short so tall has always been my deal. However, since I am only 5’2”, everyone seems taller than me.

Boxers or briefs? I have seen sexy versions of each and I welcome seeing even more.

Moustache or beard? Scruff is as far as I will go. More than that and I will be searching for my razor and shaving foam.

Long hair or shaven head? Long hair all the way!!!!

Tattoos or piercings? Nope. That is all.

Intelligent or funny? I had to think about this one…Funny over intelligent. Although intelligent should take a close second.

Blond, brunette or red head? BLONDE! (I am brunette. Opposites attract and all that)

Hottest celebrity (tell us why, if you like)?  Chris Hemsworth, need I say more? *fans self*

Top same-sex crush (or opposite sex if you already like same-sex!) I would give Mila Kunis a go.

Most disliked celebrity (tell us why, if you like) Don’t have any, sorry

Favourite food – Breyers Chocolate Chip ice cream. It’s orgasmic.

Favourite book (tell us why, if you like) Pride and Prejudice

Favourite place in the world (tell us why, if you like) – Bavaria

Anything else you’d like to add? It’s been really fun answering these questions!

Excerpt:

From the corner of her eye, the back of a blond head, paired with broad, strong shoulders, caught her attention.

She knew who it was instantly.

Alexander was walking up ahead of them in the same direction. Her entire being zeroed in on him at once and she felt her pulse spike.

Jane was saying something to her, but all of her attention was tied up with trying to see his face. He’d moved off to the side now, and it looked as though he was watching someone intently. Actually, a couple of someones—a man and a woman. On the surface it looked like he was strolling along casually, but she could not mistake the intensity of his gaze on them. It seemed almost…predatory. Was he following them?

Both her mom and her aunt walked so slowly it was almost an agony for her. She didn’t want to lose sight of him. But there was nothing she could do. If she tried to make them hurry, it would spark questions from all three. And the most likely result of her telling them why would be her mother flagging Alexander down in a loud voice, which would be embarrassing.

Jane continued to chatter away, but Raine still couldn’t focus on her cousin.

Up ahead she saw that the man and woman had stopped next to a fountain. The man was saying something. From the look they shared, it seemed to be one of those special moments. Alexander stopped, too. He was leaning casually against a pillar watching the couple.

The man Alexander watched sank down on one knee while retrieving something from his pants pocket.

Alexander changed his stance at the same time. Out of nowhere a bow appeared in his hands. He quickly notched an arrow from the right side of the quiver on his back. He drew and took aim, gazing along the shaft of the arrow.

From what she could see there was only one target apparent in that direction: the woman.

As he released the arrow, a scream rose from within her, but the sound caught in her throat. The gleaming shaft streaked across the space and sunk deep into the woman’s chest, emitting a shower of golden sparks on impact. A second arrow struck the man as well and another cloud of gold erupted. She stopped walking and, since their arms were linked together, Jane did, too.

“Did you see that?” Raine asked.

Jane glanced at her. “See what?”

She pointed in the direction and her cousin peered up ahead.

“What is it, Raine?”

Her cousin wasn’t reacting at all and neither had either of their mothers. And none of the people that had passed right by the scene of the crime were disturbed. She looked again at the couple, afraid of what she might see…and blinked.

There was no blood. No body lay on the floor. No arrow shaft stuck out from either of them. Quite the opposite. The woman was unharmed and glowing with happiness. She had accepted the ring and the man was now swinging her around in joy.

“Did you mean the couple getting engaged?” Jane asked. “Oh yes, it happens all the time here.”

Raine was stunned. Her eyes found their way back to Alexander.

Interview with Landra Graf (@riseoftheslush)

I’m delighted to welcome Landra Graf to the blog today, where she’ll be dishing the dirt on the three aspects of her personality, sexual submission and Jensen Ackles. Take it away, Landra!

What You NeedTell us about yourself. Both your writing self and your non-writing self. What are your interests and hobbies? Do you have a day job, etc?

Actually there’s three of me: the one who writes, the one who works, and the one who parents. The writer loves to read as much as write. Plenty of idea, words, and curses flow through my fingers and my mouth during those times. The worker gets to cook all day. It’s a creative job where I’m usually provide a food item and then told to make the item part of meal solution, develop a recipe or simply determine how you’d prepare with it with a specific set of equipment. The parent manages homework help, household chores, and loves playing card games and Scrabble with her spawn.

Give us the background on your latest release.

The characters in What You Need are secondary characters from a contemporary romance I’ve got in the works. They were supposed to wait for me to write their story, but around Valentine’s Day 2013 they overtook my brain and demanded my attention. I couldn’t say no.

How did you get started with writing? And what was your route to publication like?

I’ve been writing for years, but I started on the romance path a little over a year ago. My route to publication was, in a word, unexpected. I always planned on the agent bit, and then the traditional publisher. Publishing small press came at me from the side, but some of the best opportunities never hit you head on.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on a contemporary novella featuring a breast cancer survivor heroine and the King of Matchmaking. She isn’t looking for love and he’s finally ready to use his matchmaking talents on himself. This story is very dear to me and I can’t wait to get it completed.

Do you have a particular Muse for your writing? Do any of your characters bear startling resemblances to sexy celebrities or people you admire?

My muses are typically people I know, though each characters evolves into their own person. I usually find a sexy celebrity to give my characters a face, that way I know how to picture them when I write. Though I don’t think it’d be easy to figure out when you’re reading the story.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Both writing-wise and non-writing-wise?

In five years, the writer plans on having all the contemporaries I’ve got plotted out in the world for readers to enjoy. The non-writer will be nearing a point where she can quit being a non-writer and be a writer all the time.

And now for some silly questions…

Muscled or skinny? Muscled

Tall or short? Tall

Boxers or briefs? Briefs

Moustache or beard? Neither, Goatee for the win!

Long hair or shaven head? Shaven Head

Tattoos or piercings? Tattoos

Intelligent or funny? Intelligent

Blond, brunette or red head? Brunette

Hottest celebrity (tell us why, if you like)? Jensen Ackles

Top same-sex crush (or opposite sex if you already like same-sex!) Sandra Bullock

Most disliked celebrity (tell us why, if you like) Will Farrell

Favourite food? Jalapeno Cheetos

Favourite place in the world (tell us why, if you like)? Lake Minnewawa

Anything else you’d like to add? I’ve been cigarette free for 2 years. It’s a glorious feeling.

Blurb: A sexual submissive, Royce wants a woman who’ll make his fantasies come true. The last thing he expects on his 1Night Stand is to be paired with Victoria, his ex-best friend.  Haunted by their past, he refuses to deny his newfound attraction or his need for answers.  This time, he doesn’t plan to let her go.

Victoria has loved Royce forever, but the sting of his rejection is not so easily forgotten. No longer the naïve girl he knew, she’s matured into a sexual dominant. This domme demands a chance to restart their relationship—on her terms. Knowing that one night will never be enough, she plans a seduction that will last forever.

Excerpt

“Hi.” About the only word he managed before a pair of luscious, plump red lips descended on his. One sharp heel spike scratched the skin above his ankle. His trousers were tight and rough on his thighs igniting a pleasurable pain in his pulsing erection. She molded her body to his, and her nibbling bites on his mouth sent his brain reeling. The press of her weight sparked his nerves. Lord, he hadn’t experienced anything like that.

Skin hot and flushed, he moved to embrace her and deepen the kiss. Instead, she grabbed his wrists and anchored them above his head; a simple gesture of dominance and one he’d never thought of as arousing until then. Her ministrations slowed to a crawl, opting for tracing the seams of his lips and he thrusting his own eager tongue forward, desperate for another taste of spice and something familiar…a flavor of summer and sweet lemonade.

She pressed harder, her breasts crushed to his chest, his wrists still restrained, her nails biting into the flesh. Royce’s desire ratcheted up further and as he thought he might succumb to the most embarrassing release ever, she pulled away.

Panting, he tugged at his shirt collar. His date faced the window, out of the fan of illumination from low-lit lamps within the room. Curvy with toned arms and legs, her bare back on display, she stood straight and confident, her profile nothing less than stunning.

He took a deep breath and exhaled hard. What a way to start the night. Chemistry wouldn’t be an issue. But he also wanted a little conversation.

“That’s some way to say hello.” Chuckling, he grabbed his discarded bag and moved farther into the room.

“Yes, it is. But I’ve wanted to do that for a long time.” Her voice sounded sultry and all-too-familiar.

Holy hell.

“Tori?”

Seven Sensuous Days by Tina Donahue (@tinadonahue) Coming Soon!

SEVEN SENSUOUS DAYS

BOOK FOUR – APPOINTMENT WITH PLEASURE SERIES

EROTIC CONTEMPORARY

Seven Sensuous DaysBlurb:

At an erotic auction, she’s his to bid on…to take…to command.

The night’s sultry, filled with carnal promise as Tessa participates in an agency event to raise money for charity. She’s chained and bared—as women were once displayed for a sultan’s harem—her sweet looks and full figure offered to the wealthy and powerful men.

Among them is Logan. To him, Tessa is so different from his late wife, the seemingly perfect female who cruelly stole his hope and future. Wanting only to forget and have a good time, he wins Tessa, demanding she be his in every way possible, engaging in all wanton acts, though not only for an evening…for seven sensuous days at his secluded Virginia estate.

A provocative proposal with such a dangerously virile man.

A week that changes everything, with Tessa’s exquisite vulnerability and Logan’s suddenly unquenchable desire more than either bargained for.

Excerpt:

Music swelled, drums drowning out what had sounded like flutes and a female voice trilling something. Blood pounded in Tessa’s ears, muting it all. With her face lowered, all she could see was the purplish sheen of her cape. She sensed the panels in front of her parting, the stage displayed. Beyond it were a series of steps descending to a stone walkway flanked with splashing fountains, which eventually led to the crowd…the one man who was supposed to win her for an evening.

A full day was reserved for goddesses like Felicity. With her participation in this event, Ronnie would probably have enough funds to build a community college for young women.

The microphone screeched with brief feedback. Tessa made a face. Ronnie said something Tessa didn’t quite catch.

She bit her bottom lip, and decided to hell with it. She was going to take Felicity’s advice and fantasize.

“He’s dark and dangerous,” Felicity had said.

His features would be masculine, strong, slightly rough, his face shadowed with his coming beard. No, wait. He’d have a mustache and a closely cropped goatee, that hair as dark as his eyebrows. His eyes would be black, piercing, his skin a deep bronze, his lips satiny, his mouth full and rich.

He’d move into her with a right given him by birth, as a ruler. As a male. Looking down at her, he’d smile, shameless lust transforming his features, making him seem even more dangerous. Sex would be on his terms. He’d take her in any manner he chose. Orally, vaginally, anally, his strength precluding escape, his stiffened cock demanding its due, all that she could—

Tessa’s cunt stopped aching with need as her hood fell away. Or rather, Brian had pulled it back. Instinctively, she lifted her head, her attention darting everywhere, much as she suspected a real captive would have behaved, not knowing what to expect. A part of her mind recorded water spraying from the fountains, the again-subdued music, rich and seductive. Ronnie’s voice. The muted conversations of the ladies with their so-called masters.

Those men who hadn’t yet made their selections were quiet. Tessa regarded each. Some were listening to Ronnie. Others glanced at Tessa’s cloak, no doubt wanting it off.

With a flourish, Brian complied and pulled the thing from her, then lifted her arms above her head, securing her shackled wrists to the column.

Tessa stiffened at being exposed in every way possible. There was no hiding her nudity or expression up here, not with the lights trained on her. They weren’t fully intrusive, just enough illumination to exhibit, making her the brightest spot among all the shadows and the torches’ flickering flames. The toasty breeze skimmed the faint moisture on her cunt and licked her nipples, puckering them even more so that the tips appeared that much longer. Areas Felicity’s makeup had accentuated.

Perspiration prickled Tessa’s neck. Her heart beat out of time, the pose she struck both daunting and oddly arousing. There was absolutely nothing to compare to this…being chained and displayed. A sensation of delicious helplessness. Intense vulnerability.

Especially as no one spoke up.

Oh no.

Embarrassment drove heat to Tessa’s throat and cheeks. The music played on and on. Each second crawled by while her mind raced. Would her part in the auction stop when the piece ended even though no one had offered a price? Would Ronnie call for an intermission then, or would she want to continue with the rest of the event as quickly as—

Someone called out a bid.

Tessa’s heart paused. She hadn’t hear the amount. It didn’t matter. One man, at least, craved her.

Who? She studied the audience. A guy, forty or so, smiled with kindness, rather than lust, no doubt sensing and seeing her uncertainty. She offered her own smile in return, liking his sympathetic manner, wondering if he was the one who’d bid on her.

No. He’d already turned to the server and was now pointing at his drink as though he wanted a new one more than anything else.

So who had made the offer?

Another client kept looking from her to Ronnie. Others took a moment to study the program, see who was coming up next.

That would be Felicity. For her, the men would shout over each other, demanding to be heard, letting the money flow freely.

Another bid rang out.

Completely surprised, Tessa continued to regard the crowd, her attention drawn finally, almost irresistibly, to Logan Kincaid.

She forgot to breathe.

Someone had relit the torch nearest his table. Its bobbing light bathed him in a warm golden glow.

Tessa’s body softened.

Young—thirties or so, just as she’d thought—he wore his dark brown hair longish on the top and sides, combed away from his face. His features were rugged, deliciously masculine, especially his shadow of beard. Tessa had no doubt those short bristles would be rough to the touch, a wonderful contradiction to the silkiness of his lips, his generous mouth. A man’s mouth.

Warmth sluiced through her again, the heat soothing this time. Arousing.

He wore a beige blazer that went well with his tan complexion, his white shirt opened at the collar. Decidedly relaxed. The same as his demeanor. He lowered his drink…whiskey or bourbon…from here it was impossible for her to tell. He glanced at his watch, then surveyed the crowd, not her.

Ronnie took another bid.

With a neutral expression, Logan regarded the man who’d made it.

Tessa didn’t bother to look. She focused on Logan.

Another bid followed the last. As if to determine why, Logan finally glanced at the stage.

Tessa’s pulse pounded. Her legs felt watery.

His attention swept upward from the ridiculous shoes she wore to her naked calves and thighs. He studied her exposed cunt and glittering body jewelry for a moment, then continued to her bared breasts, viewing them briefly before he at last reached her eyes.

There, he stopped, as though he hadn’t meant to. There, he lingered.

An Interview with Tara Quan (@LaylaTarar)

I’m delighted to welcome Tara Quan back to the site. This time, she’s answering interview questions and discussing globetrotting, speaking Italian and Alexander Skarsgard…

Catching RedTell us about yourself. Both your writing self and your non-writing self. What are your interests and hobbies? Do you have a day job, etc?

I’m a bit of a globetrotter. My husband’s job makes us move to a new country every so often (the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, thus far), which is great since I love learning new languages. I’ve been taking Italian full time for the past six months, but I can get back to writing after Valentine’s Day. I’ve had a number of day jobs up to this point (running the gamut from paralegal work, administrative work, event planning, newsletter editing, etc.), but the year we spent in Karachi allowed me to save up enough to indulge in writing full-time for the next couple of months. After that, I guess we’ll see.

Give us the background on your latest release.

I’m a huge fan of both fairy tales and Resident Evil videogames, and a submission call prompted me to marry these two interests into my Undead Fairy Tales series. While zombies occasionally get categorized under paranormal and my publisher considers my books urban fantasy, I would categorize the series as sci-fi. My degree is in biology, and my first job was as a lab tech—both came in handy for designing a fictional Undead Reanimation virus.

How did you get started with writing? And what was your route to publication like?

When I was in high school, I wrote Harry Potter fan fiction. Being overly logical, I shelved writing throughout college and fixated on more “sensible” career paths. Suffice it to say that I’m not great at being sensible—I got back into writing after my husband announced he’d gotten his dream job, which required us to move to Abu Dhabi in less than 30 days. Since this move more or less absolved me from contributing significantly to our family income, I started writing again (while working full-time at the very definition of a dead-end job).

Two trunked (and multiply rejected) manuscripts later, I stumbled upon a submission call for a zombie fairy tale. I wrote the novella, answered the call, and got rejected again. I was convinced Tower in the Woods was worth at least a few more submissions, and it eventually found a home at Liquid Silver books.

What are you currently working on?

Another fairy tale-inspired submission call has caught my fancy, so I’m going to give romantic suspense another try. I also have a Christmas story awaiting revisions on my computer (which I am, admittedly, procrastinating on).

Do you have a particular Muse for your writing? Do any of your characters bear startling resemblances to sexy celebrities or people you admire?

My dream is to be able to write like Nalini Singh, whose heroes—angel, shifter or vampire—are all to die for. However, I think my funny side gets the better of me so my “men” all end up being significantly less alpha.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Both writing-wise and non-writing-wise?

Let’s see—in 2019, I’ll be moving again and probably learning a new language. I’m hoping to blog regularly once I’m in Rome (this July), so my website should be more robust. I should also have a significantly larger backlist (twenty more books would be ideal). Since I hate job interviews, I’m crossing my fingers I would have moved past the “intern paid in coffee” phase of author-dom to “part time minimum wage earner.”

And now for some silly questions…

Muscled or skinny? Muscled (Let’s hope my husband doesn’t read this)

Tall or short? Taller than me (I’m 5’0’’, so most people should qualify)

Boxers or briefs? Boxers

Moustache or beard? Light Beard (think 5 o’clock shadow)

Long hair or shaven head? Long Hair (preferably in a queue at the nape, with a silver clasp. Yes, this is something to which I’ve given much thought).

Tattoos or piercings? Tattoos.

Intelligent or funny? Funny. I like being the brains of the family.

Blond, brunette or red head? Blond

Hottest celebrity (tell us why, if you like)? I have a crush on Aleksandr Skarsgard. In vogue or not, I still think vampires are super sexy.

Top same-sex crush (or opposite sex if you already like same-sex!) Natalie Portman. Yes, I did watch Star Wars Ep1-3. And yes, I liked them.

Most disliked celebrity (tell us why, if you like) Cartman from South Park. I know he’s a cartoon character, but he grosses me out.

Favourite food. Persimmons (they look like tomatoes, but they taste divine).

Favourite book (tell us why, if you like) Archangel’s Storm by Nalini Singh. There’s something about an angel with jet black wings and a tattooed face….

Favourite place in the world (tell us why, if you like) Wherever my laptop is located at any given moment.

Anything else you’d like to add? I loathe winter. It makes me want to hibernate.

Catching Red

Scarlet “Red” Ryding is on a mission. To prevent mass suicide, she must fulfill her grandmother’s evil wishes and return posthaste. With knives in hand, she dives headfirst into an abandoned hospital full of zombies. But after getting trapped within, she is forced to accept help from the world’s most dangerous predator—a man.

Covert Agent Marcus Woodsman received strict instructions against interfering in the affairs of nomads. As a spy for the Federal Military Agency, his mandate is to observe and report. But when he finds a little redhead caught in the center of a brain-eater swarm, conscience compels him to put his ax to good use. By the time he realizes this smart-ass scout comes equipped with a world of trouble, it’s too late—he would do anything to keep her safe.

As Red and her Woodsman work together to survive undead, brave a snowstorm, and bring down an evil cult, they learn to laugh, love, and fight for happiness. The second book in Tara Quan’s Undead Fairy Tales series, Catching Red is a post-apocalyptic thriller with a happily ever after.

Excerpt:

Scarlet woke to the delicious smell of charred venison and cooking fruit. The rusty feeling between her joints was gone. She rubbed her crusted eyes as she curled into a sitting position. For the first time in months, she felt energized and rested.

Her bed ended where the kitchen area began. Marcus stood in front of the wood-burning stove, his back facing her. Even with his neck bent and spine curved, his blond head grazed the low ceiling. He wrapped a thick cloth around his hand, lifted the cast-iron skillet, and turned in place. He plunked it down on the circular stone tray at the center of her small rickety table. Her first and only attempt at carpentry creaked but didn’t fall apart.

She lifted an eyebrow as she scrutinized the skillet’s contents—seared smoked venison covered with slices of dried apple. It was an interesting meal choice.

Perhaps in reaction to her quizzical expression, he turned his palms up and defended his creation. “The food store in your basement is a mess. This was all I could scrounge up.”

She frowned. “I packed and stacked everything in alphabetical order.”

His broad shoulders rose and fell. “Your system didn’t make any sense. You’ll have to explain it sometime. Either way, this beats the MREs I fed you during the snowstorm. Come on. Your breakfast is getting cold.”

She grabbed the worn quilt and wrapped it over her shoulders. She was about to lower her feet to the cold floor when she saw him shake his head.
